![]() Undoubtedly, with this collection, sexuality studies comes of age as an academic field. The various contributions to this book will appeal to social scientists (especially sociologists, psychologists and sexologists), biomedical scientists, health professionals and other academic and professional audiences, and students, researchers and instructors of sexuality studies. Their contributions outline some of the major theoretical and methodological problems that still confront the study of modern sexualities, while also presenting a selection of theoretical and methodological issues of interest to both new and experienced researchers.This anthology identifies the need in contemporary social and cultural studies for more elaborate understandings of the relations of various masculinities and femininities to power, nation, empire, violence, race, class, and embodiment, and, in doing so, brings together an eclectic, multidisciplinary, and wide-ranging collection of essays. Each author lays out the traditional parameters of the methodology used in their perspectives of social science research, and openly discusses how they have been applied to the study of hetero sexuality/non-heterosexuality and the ways in which their theory and methodology may be improved. The contributors to this book are brought together from three different methodological spheres: qualitative, quantitative, and historical/comparative. Revisiting Sexualities in the 21st Century examines a whole set of explanatory and definitional issues from the very outset, particularly regarding what may be rightly included and excluded from its provenance and coverage. Western style "sexual acceptability" is, in turn, determined by the prevailing white, heterosexual standards of patriarchy perpetuated through childhood masculine socialization and adolescent and adult machismo practices. Although the human capacity for sexual expression spans a wide range of variations and permutations, it is nonetheless seriously confined, limited and restricted to. Sexual interactions are socially constructed within a historical, social and cultural milieu, and are continually defined and redefined accordingly depending on the surrounding economic, political, moral, and religious social forces. Using this framework of the uncanny and the feminine, Alice Angel will be explored as a feminine monster character that is in turn reflective of male anxieties about mental health. ![]() Others have also noted on how the space provided within horror, particularly survival horror video games, provide uncanny architecture, characters, and actions that lend the video game platform to a unique horror experience. Furthermore, this anxiety is doubled due to its masculine construction.Īs Barbara Creed (2005a) has argued, this type of anxiety isn’t uncommon within horror tropes. She reflects masculine anxieties about power of feminine bodies, which is reflected back to players as a form of fear inducement. Alice, through the functions of gender performance and as a the primal uncanny for Ink Bendy, operates as an uncanny presence and feminine monster within the game. By killing other ink characters in the studio, Alice is able to fix her deformed appearance and appear as she did in the animated cartoon (Kindly Beast, 2017-2018). Alice is obsessed with maintaining a pretty face for her role in the Bendy cartoon. ![]() ![]() Susie Campbell’s incarnation of Alice Angel provides the antagonist role of Chapters 3 and 4 in the game. Alice as a character is the embodiment of two separate employees of the animation studio: Susie Campbell, the original voice actor of Alice Angel, and Allison Pendle, the voice actor who replaced Susie for the character of Alice. Alice Angel, despite not being the title antagonist of the story, offers a monstrous addition to the game. Bendy (Kindly Beast, 2017-2018) features an array of characters that Stein encounters, attempting to figure out what happened to the workers of the animation studio, as many of them have become animated incarnations of the characters in the Bendy cartoon. ![]() The video game shows the first-person survival adventure of Henry Stein, a retired animator, as he becomes ensnared in the nightmare of Bendy, during a trip back to his old animator’s studio. Bendy and the Ink Machine (Kindly Beast, 2017-2018) (Bendy going forward) was released in episodic fashion between February 2017 and October 2018. ![]()
